European/Historical Swords

European swords were designed for different modes of combat. Late European swords were often designed for horseback or unhorsed against lightly-armored infantry. The design of these swords was usually curved, with a single sharp edge. Into the 19th and 20th centuries, swords were all but abandoned in Europe as guns took center stage, and they evolved into the ceremonial weapons carried by forces such as today’s United States Marine Corps.

THIS MONTHS EUROPEAN/HISTORICAL SWORDS FEATURED ITEMS

Brass Swept Hilt Rapier
A classic, circa 1570-1650. Hand made by highly skilled artisans with a diamond cross section, tempered, high carbon steel blade. Polished bone grip, this is a very handsome and effective rapier.

The Towton
In the winter of 1461, the yet uncrowned Edward IV marched a large Yorkist (the white rose of the "War Of The Roses") army northward to attack the Lancastrian (the red rose) forces of the legitimate King Henry VI.

Arbedo Sword
In Arbedo on June 22, 1422 the famous Milanese cavalry commander Carmagnola, along with Angelo de la Pergola, 6,000 horsemen and 4,000 footmen, attacked an army of 4,000 Swiss pikemen and halberdiers.

Small Sword
The advantage of the sword point over the edge became increasingly evident by the end of the 16th century.

Viking Sword
The typical Viking sword of the 9th and 10th centuries featured a long wide blade with a broad central fuller and two keen edges.
